Shimla: The Directorate of Forensics Services in Himachal Pradesh has orchestrated a groundbreaking two-day workshop on ‘Forensic Toxicology’ scheduled for the 4th and 5th of March 2024. This visionary initiative aims to explore and deliberate on enhanced examination procedures for swift case resolution, reducing turnaround time, and ensuring top-notch results in accordance with the International Standard of ISO/IEC/17025.
At the inauguration, Dr. Meenakshi Mahajan extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest, Dr. Priyankar Ghosh, Director (Retired), Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Dr. Ghosh, an illustrious expert in Forensic Chemistry & Toxicology, Lead Assessor, and Technical Assessor (Chemical sciences) NABL, was briefed on the workshop’s objectives.
Dr. A.K. Jaswal, Senior Scientist at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi, shared valuable insights online, enriching the expertise of participating officers and officials.
During the inaugural session, Dr. Priyankar Ghosh highlighted that nearly 50% of samples in Indian Forensic Science Laboratories fall under Forensic Chemistry & Toxicology sections. The intricacies of extracting poison from biological matrices often lead to delayed reports. Dr. Ghosh emphasized the need for systematic analysis and the critical role of the sample medium in obtaining accurate results.
Dr. A.K Jaswal engaged in discussions addressing queries from experts. Delving into the advantages and disadvantages, he explored ways to enhance services within the Chemistry and Toxicology Division, ensuring timely submission of forensic reports.
Participants actively contributed to discussions, creating an interactive environment focused on expediting case resolutions in the realm of Forensic Toxicology. A comprehensive timeline has been established for the development of the Working Procedure Manual for Chemistry & Toxicology, aligning with International Standards. Assigned scientists have committed to completing their tasks within a stipulated two-month period, with Dr. Priyankar Ghosh providing invaluable inputs throughout the process.
