Solan: In an exciting educational endeavour, students from Solan Public School embarked on a memorable journey to the Solan Railway Station, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on September 1, 2023. This remarkable visit was made possible through the support of the Department of Railways, and it left an indelible mark on the students and staff.
The visit to Solan Railway Station provided a unique opportunity for the young learners to delve into the inner workings of the railway systems. Under the expert guidance of Mr Dinesh Sharma, the Station Superintendent, the students gained invaluable insights into rail transportation.
A highlight of the day was the exploration of the historic Kalka–Shimla Railway, boasting a narrow gauge of 610 mm (2 ft). Constructed by the Delhi–Ambala–Kalka Railway Company and inaugurated in 1903, this railway is a testament to engineering excellence and a bygone era of rail travel.
Safety is paramount in railways, and the students were introduced to the intricate workings of rail signals and safety mechanisms. The Solan Public School community greatly appreciated Mr. Sharma’s willingness to share his expertise.
The day’s adventure didn’t stop at learning alone. The students had the opportunity to take a mesmerizing walk near the legendary tunnel no. 39, guided by the Station Master.
